Selecting French Bulldog Food

You have been searching the internet: French bulldog puppies for sale. So you have just adopted a new Frenchie from a reputable French Bulldog breeder or you are searching for a food for your French Bulldog puppy or adult Frenchie. Here are a few suggestions in selecting a food for French Bulldog.

Have you ever wondered why one food costs so much more than another? Ever been online and read all the discussions of ingredients as if that were the most important factor to chose food for your French Bulldog by? I have. Most people overlook the most important  information, the Guaranteed Analysis! The GA (guaranteed analysis), located in the little box of percentages tell you much more about the food than the ingredient list. Its list includes the minimum amount of protein and fat, moisture content, fiber content and often times the kcal content. Kcals are the calories which equal energy. The amount of energy in the food determines how much of the food you will need to be feed your French Bulldog. There can be all kinds of wonderful foods listed in the ingredient panel and still have a very low kcal amount or one for maintenance only. This will be ineffective if you have a French Bulldog puppy or a very active French Bulldog or a pregnant Frenchie or nursing French Bulldog. If the kcal count is to low the food will be used up faster to accommodate the higher energy level of the French Bulldog's need based on your Frenchies activity level and reproductive status as well as your Frenchies health status and the age of your French Bulldog . For example: a food can have 25% protein but only 340 kcals per cup as compared to a food with 25% protein and 450 kcals per cup. This is almost double the amount. Always check the GA when selecting food for your French bulldog puppy/dog. A kcal in the 400's is a good level for all life stages of the French bulldog and the 350's is food for maintenance and less active Frenchies.

Note the fiber content when choosing a food for your French Bulldog! Fiber is often used by lesser quality dog food companies to fill up your French Bulldog or by dog foods manufactured for overweight dogs (yes, even French Bulldogs can get a little overweight).

What is the fat level in the food you are choosing for your French Bulldog?
The preferred source of energy for dogs is fat. A lower fat level  will most definitely mean a lower kcal level for that food. There are foods available with fat levels between 8-12% being advertised to accommodate all life stages of the French Bulldog. While a food with this fat content could be used for the full life of the frenchie, it would take quite a bit of this food to meet your French Bulldog's need and will lead to more expense.

What is the moisture level?
The moisture level is typically the same for all foods and is not something that you need to compare in choosing a dog food for your Frenchie.

What about the protein level for your French bulldog?
The fat level and the fiber is a good indication of the make up of the food content and the possible calorie content.

Ingredients are important in the food you choose for your French Bulldog!
We can see the "best" and "fanciest" list of ingredients on the panel but the food can also be the least cost efficient food as well. There are many products on the market that fulfill both the needs of efficiency for the consumer and efficiency for your Frenchie. You just have to know how to find them.

Digestibility is also important for your French Bulldog.
How do we determine digestibility in your Frenchie? By stool formation or your Frenchie's condition and energy level. If your French Bulldog is losing weight, moping around, acting hungry and or having light colored stools, your Frenchie may not be digesting the product very well.

Is cost a factor to you when choosing a food for your French bulldog puppy?
Foods that include all of the proper nutrients for digestibility and energy level will be more expensive. The bottom line is to be informed, check out the GA when selecting a food for your French Bulldog.  Call the manufacturer if you can not find the kcal amount per cup listed on the bag.

Many newer manufacturer of food will employ the formulators of their products to help them formulate their foods and then will make sure the ingredient panel is "humanistically" acceptable. They then mark it with a really high price and claim it is better when in reality the best fog food is the one your Frenchie does best on and the one that is economically acceptable to you.
