How to Choose a French Bulldog Puppy For Sale

Now that you've decided that a French Bulldog puppy is the right choice as the new addition to your family, you've still got the task of actually choosing which Frenchie puppy is best suited for you and your home. Picking out a French Bulldog puppy can seem like a daunting task, but in reality, it can be a painless and even fun experience. Of course the first thing you need to consider is finding a French Bulldog breeder that is willing to help you along with your search. If the breeder is hesitant about any part of the process, you should seriously consider going elsewhere.

There are of course some things that you must know about each French Bulldog puppy that you consider buying. We've made this as easy as possible for you with a simple checklist, as long as the puppies conform to these standards, you can be confident that you're making a well informed decision. However, if you plan on showing your French Bulldog, there are many more factors to consider which you can find out about on our Frenchie Show Standards article.

Many of these French Bulldog traits are ones that you can notice in photos, we supply a fairly good amount of up to date pictures of each puppy we list for sale, and even videos so that you can see how your new puppy acts. However, some of these features will require you to ask the breeder specifically about the puppy. As a show quality French Bulldog breeder, we are more than happy to address any questions or concerns you may have about any puppy you are considering purchasing from AfrenchBulldog.com as well as our sires and dams. We also make this very easy with our Live Chat function which you can find at the bottom of each page, if the icon is “Online,” we are available to assist you. If not, please do not hesitate to call our toll free number any time. You should be sure that whatever breeder you choose, they are not hesitant to answer any questions you have about their available puppies or their parents.

French Bulldog's Head
The French Bulldog's head should be large and flat, eyes should be dark, set low down in the skull and wide apart. The skull should be flat between the ears, but the forehead slightly rounded. The muzzle is broad, deep and well laid back with heavy wrinkles in the hollow point between the eyes. Their ears should resemble bat ears, long, wide and pointy appearing alert. (If the puppies ears are not yet standing, that is alright, some puppies take longer to develop strong enough muscles than others.)

French Bulldog's Body
Look for compactness! This means that the Frenchie's back should be short, not like a Dachsund. The legs should not be long and slender, but rather short and stocky instead. A useful tip is that the spine and the legs should be about the same length forming a square box. The puppy should also have a nice, deep chest.

French Bulldog's Coat
The Frenchie's coat should be short and smooth. This applies to all French Bulldog puppies, they are not a long haired, shaggy dog. Ever. In addition, there are several colors that are acceptable for your new French Bulldog puppy, including:

  • Brindle
  • Black
  • Cream
  • Fawn
  • Chocolate
  • Pied (white, spotted with another of these colors)

Frenchies can also come in blue or chocolate, however, these colors are not recognized by the AKC.

French Bulldog's Gender
This could very well be the most important factor when purchasing your new Frenchie puppy. You should know that while French Bulldogs are social and friendly, they can be (especially males) quite rambunctious and even exhibit some same-sex aggression. However, this can be avoided with socialization and training early on.

The males are considered by many as being nicer in look, as the typical French Bulldog characteristics are more pronounced. They are also, as stated previously, more rambunctious, which some people enjoy as they believe this gives the Frenchie character and a little extra personality.

French Bulldog's Temperment
Frenchies are well-behaved, adaptable, and comfortable companions with an affectionate nature and even disposition. Generally they are active, alert, and playful, but not unduly boisterous. The French Bulldog's bright, intelligent, lively personality makes it a wonderful companion and these traits should be apparent in its expression and demeanor.
